Rising Cost Of Living Worries Parents As Schools Resume

Nigerian parents are grappling with rising costs of tuition, transportation, and basic goods as schools resume on September 9, putting pressure on household budgets. In interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), parents expressed frustration over the economic hardship they face.

Banker Chimuze Eze noted that last year’s increase in school expenses has persisted, worsened by the recent hike in petrol prices, which affects transportation and food costs. He warned that the upcoming school term would be particularly challenging for parents.

Jessica Nana, a mother of two, lamented the high costs of preparing her children for school. She emphasized that transportation fees and school-related expenses had surged, making it difficult for parents to cope.

Businessman Joseph Okoh shared that he had to transfer his children to a more affordable school to manage rising living costs, including transportation and food. Mrs. Funmilayo Ade, a resident of Nyanya, highlighted that saving money is no longer enough, with increasing fuel prices exacerbating financial strain.

Parents are appealing to the government to address the fuel price hike, which has a ripple effect on the economy, to alleviate the burden on households.
