Nigerians Abandon Toothpaste for Chewing Sticks Amidst Economic Hardsh

In response to the recent surge in the cost of basic commodities, including toothpaste, many Nigerians are turning to traditional methods like chewing sticks to maintain oral hygiene. With toothpaste prices exceeding N5,000 for a supply that lasts less than two weeks, families are opting for more affordable alternatives amid worsening economic conditions.

Chewing sticks, known for their medicinal and antibacterial properties, are gaining popularity once again. Nigerians like photographer Vincent Osamese and trader Adunni Hungbo have switched to chewing sticks to reduce expenses. Osamese noted how his family initially resisted the change but ultimately embraced it due to the high cost of toothpaste, while Hungbo expressed similar financial relief after finding that chewing sticks cost just N100 compared to N2,000 for toothpaste.

The rising prices of fuel and other essentials are making it difficult for many to afford basic items. Families are also exploring alternatives like powder paste for children, as noted by plumber Fehintola Ademide and mother Maureen Agu.

Research supports the effectiveness of chewing sticks in combating bacteria linked to dental diseases, making them a practical and cost-effective solution for many Nigerians in the face of persistent inflation and economic struggles. This shift highlights the broader impact of rising costs and the adaptation to traditional practices for survival.
