Lagos, Ogun launch campaign to end open defecation

The Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) and the Ogun State Environmental Protection Agency (OGEPA) have jointly launched a media campaign to eliminate open defecation along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
In a post on X on Wednesday, Tokunbo Wahab, the Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, emphasized that the initiative is aimed at preventing the spread of cholera and other communicable diseases. He highlighted that the campaign also seeks to restore the aesthetic appeal of the expressway, particularly the median stretch from OPIC Plaza to Otedola Bridge.
Wahab mentioned that various stakeholders have been engaged to monitor and report violations in the area. Babatunde Ajayi, General Manager of LASEPA, stressed the importance of educating the public on the severe health risks associated with open defecation, especially during the rainy season. He stated, “We will collaborate with local governments, Environmental Health Officers, market women, and law enforcement agencies to oversee the area and ensure any infractions are reported for legal action.”
Oluwadare Kehinde, General Manager of OGEPA, praised LASEPA’s initiative and underscored the significance of cross-state collaboration in addressing environmental challenges. “This initiative sets a strong precedent for how we can work together to tackle common issues,” Kehinde said. He also noted that Ogun State is partnering with global companies to construct additional public restrooms to help eradicate open defecation.
