Lagos Approves Yoruba Language For Testing Pupils Seeking Admission I

The Lagos State Government has approved Yoruba as a subject for testing the knowledge and thinking abilities of primary six pupils transitioning to public junior secondary schools through the Placement Test by Continuous Assessment Scores (CAS) starting in 2025. The Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. Abayomi Abolaji, announced this at a stakeholders’ meeting. The policy aims to promote the teaching and learning of Yoruba, already part of the state’s education curriculum, to enhance cultural values. The decision resulted from discussions among various educational stakeholders and aligns with UNESCO’s recommendation to use indigenous languages in early education. In 2025, the Placement Test will cover Mathematics (including Quantitative Reasoning and Primary Science) and Language (comprising English, Yoruba, Verbal Reasoning, and General Paper).
