Food Crisis: Army Deploys Officers To Protect Farmers In The North
The Nigerian Army has deployed troops in northern states, particularly in the North West and North Central regions, to protect farmers during the rainy season. This move is intended to ensure a successful planting season amidst the country’s ongoing food shortages and high food inflation, which reached 40.87% in June 2024. Inflation has been driven by rising prices of essential food items, with Edo State experiencing the highest year-on-year food inflation at 47.34%. In response to the food crisis, the Federal Government has suspended import duties on key food items and approved the procurement of agricultural equipment to mitigate the situation.
