Enugu Suspends Industrial Gas Emission Levy

The Enugu State Government has suspended the Industrial Gas Emission Levy, introduced by the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, citing the outdated nature of the state’s environmental law. Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, announced the suspension, effective August 29, along with the termination of the consultancy managing the levy. The levy was initially imposed on residents using power sources other than the national grid, claiming violations of several sections of the state’s environmental laws. One resident received a notice demanding a fine of N88,000 for using an alternative power source.

Onyia refuted such claims, labeling the report as false and clarifying that the government’s policies encourage renewable energy as environmentally friendly. He explained that while the Ministry of Environment acted within its legal authority under the 2024 Enugu State Environmental and Climate Protection Law, the enforcement of levies on alternative energy sources was premature. The necessary groundwork and infrastructure for full implementation of the law had not yet been established.

The government has since directed the refund of any levies already collected and is working on a comprehensive climate policy to balance environmental protection with industrial growth. Governor Peter Mbah’s administration remains committed to promoting clean energy and ensuring transparent regulatory practices.
