Dangote Refinery May Dump Local Market, Export Petrol

The Dangote refinery may start exporting its Premium Motor Spirit (petrol) due to a dispute with the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC). The NNPC has stated it will only purchase Dangote’s petrol if it is cheaper than international market prices, contrary to Dangote’s claims that the refinery was awaiting NNPC’s rollout. The NNPC has clarified it will not be the sole buyer and that domestic refineries can sell to any willing buyer.

Despite Dangote’s readiness to supply petrol and its significant capacity, local sales have been hindered, leading to the possibility of exporting the product. Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) has expressed willingness to buy Dangote’s petrol at any price if NNPC refuses to do so.

Fuel scarcity continues in various states, with prices on the black market reaching up to N1,400 per litre, and filling stations experiencing long queues or closures.
