ASUU to embark On Nationwide Strike, issues 21-day notice to Federal G
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has notified the Federal Government of its intention to begin a nationwide strike, issuing a 21-day notice. This decision followed a National Executive Council meeting at the University of Ibadan. The notice is in accordance with labor laws and is not an ultimatum. ASUU’s action is a response to the government’s failure to implement agreements made with the union, including the 2009 re-negotiated agreements and the payment of accumulated academic allowances. Despite a meeting with the Minister of Education in June, where progress was expected within two weeks, ASUU’s demands remain unmet. These include the revitalization of universities through a fund based on the Needs Assessment Report, which has largely been unpaid since 2013. The union also expressed concerns about the unchecked approval of new universities without adequate funding.
